Why Elon Musk Is Building TeraFab: The AI Compute Shortage Explained

Description

What happens when the world's chip factories still aren't enough for the amount of AI compute one company wants to build?

Elon Musk's answer is TeraFab — a planned large-scale semiconductor manufacturing project in Texas designed to produce advanced chips for Tesla's vehicles and Optimus robots, as well as high-power processors for SpaceX's planned space-based AI infrastructure. Intel joined the project in 2026, with the companies targeting 1 terawatt of compute production per year at full scale.

Musk has argued that current AI-compute manufacturing capacity is roughly 20 gigawatts per year, which he describes as only about 2% of the compute capacity he expects to need for the TeraFab vision. That is a statement from Musk, not an independent measurement of the entire global semiconductor industry.

In this video, we break down the “compute deficit” behind TeraFab and explore why Musk wants much more control over the silicon supply chain.
