Elon Musk announces $20B chip plant coming to Central Texas | Where will it go?

Kind: captions Language: en Another massive semiconductor plant could be coming to Central Texas and and it could help tech mogul Elon Musk consolidate more of his businesses operations. On Saturday, Musk held a special event at the Seaholm Power Plant here in Austin to announce the $25 billion Terafab plant. Now, Musk said it would be a central hub to create advanced chips that would go into everything from Tesla vehicles to Optimus robots to AI satellites. He says all combined, the world's chipmakers can't create all the chips needed to power that technology. And while Musk says his companies are grateful to chipmakers like Samsung, Micron, and others for their partnerships, his companies need to take matters [music] into their own hands. There's There's a maximum rate at which they're comfortable expanding. But that rate is uh much less than we would like. And so we we either build the Terafab or we don't have the chips. So, where would this massive factory be built? There's a lot of speculation that it'll be next to Tesla in Southeast Travis County, but nothing is set in stone. Today, we spoke with John Boyd, a site selection expert for semiconductor facilities, and he told us Central Texas is still a top location for developments like this due to the business-friendly environment and the available workforce. Eight uh tech workers around the country continue to find cost of living advantages in Central Texas versus the Bay Area or versus areas like Southern California where or New York City. So, that continues to be a draw along with the lack of a personal income tax. That's something engineers uh favor, okay, especially with the affordability challenges happening in so many places around the country today. Boyd also told us Central Texas is home to a lot of workforce training initiatives to help meet the employee demand that this factory would create. Musk hasn't announced a firm timeline timeline to start building the Terafab.
