Tesla’s Terafab: Can Elon Really Build a Chip Fab?

Tesla has broken ground on a roughly $3 billion R&D chip fab in Austin. Separately, Elon Musk’s companies have filed plans for a much larger Terafab production complex in Grimes County, Texas. But a cleanroom filled with the world’s best tools is not yet a competitive fab. Together, those tools can process and inspect silicon. They cannot print yield.

• Austin: Tesla management says the R&D fab is being built for a few thousand wafer starts per month. It is not a high-volume production fab.

• Grimes County: Phase One plans call for roughly $16.8 billion of investment across 2026–2028.

• Longer term: four proposed phases could reach roughly $119 billion through 2036—but only if every phase is completed.

• Scale: more than 100 million square feet refers to planned manufacturing space, not cleanroom space.
