Elon Musk appears to have identified a site for his massive Terafab chipmaking facility – and it’s right outside of Aggieland. The Grimes County Commissioners Court posted a public notice that states it will consider Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. on June 3 for a potential tax abatement.
Several other companies, like Apple, Samsung Electronics, Tesla and IBM, have announced plans to build plants in the U.S., including several in Texas. Advertisement · Article continues below this ad · RELATED: Elon Musk proposes $55 billion Terafab facility near College Station ·
Lam Research’s technology allows for the precise etching of the through-silicon vias (TSVs) necessary for this packaging. The company’s products could meet the Terafab requirement for dense, high-performance architectures that traditional automotive chips do not require.
Ai | SpaceX filed plans for Terafab, a $55 billion to $119 billion AI chip facility in Grimes County, Texas, jointly run with Tesla and xAI to produce 2-nanometer chips for robotics, autonomous vehicles, and space-based AI compute, with Intel ...
Confirming the development, Musk, during Tesla’s first quarterly earnings call for the year, specified that Terafab chips will be using Intel’s new 14A process to design chips made at Terafab.
The whole premise behind spacex ipo'ing is to raise cash for their million orbital datacenters. And then there is the terafab.
What makes this announcement unusual is its timing. Rather than seeking federal CHIPS Act funding upfront, Terafab appears to be self-financed in its early stages, with the tax abatement request serving as the primary public incentive.
The plant is tentatively planned ... advanced packaging facility, AP2, will be launched depending on customer demand. Supply chain sources said strong demand from US customers, continued reports of competition from Intel and Samsung Electronics for advanced chip orders, and efforts by companies including Apple, Google, and AMD to diversify foundry sourcing beyond TSMC were all likely to accelerate the company's US expansion. Sources added that Elon Musk's Terafab initiative ...
The centrepiece is the MATCH Act, which would require the Netherlands and Japan to align DUV lithography export restrictions with US rules within 150 days or face unilateral enforcement, cutting off ASML’s remaining China sales and banning servicing of existing machines. China has already enacted comprehensive supply chain security regulations and rare earth restrictions, while the US simultaneously builds domestic capacity through CHIPS Act investments and the $25B Terafab project.
Musk’s teams contacted major chip equipment suppliers for the $25 billion Terafab AI chip plant, which Intel was named as the foundry partner for, arguably the single largest catalyst for the stock’s surge. Nvidia, despite pausing its own 18A testing over yield concerns, invested $5 billion in Intel common stock, a vote of confidence in the company if not yet in the process node. The national security case for domestic chip manufacturing has only strengthened since the CHIPS Act was written.
The project involves two separate facilities on the Giga Texas campus: one dedicated to chips for automotive and humanoid robotics applications, including Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, its Cybercab robotaxi programme, and the Optimus robot ...
SpaceX filed a public notice in Grimes County, Texas, proposing an initial investment of $55 billion to build a semiconductor and advanced-computing complex called Terafab, according to filings and reporting by Reuters, The New York Times, and ...

The economics got even more interesting when SpaceX filed paperwork in Grimes County, Texas for an initial $55B semiconductor fab for Terafab, xAI's chip play. Rather than wait on TSMC and Samsung capacity, the fab will potentially scale to $119B over multiple phases, built with Tesla resources and Intel as manufacturing partner. The project is sized for his stated goal of producing enough chips for 1 Terawatt of compute annually, supplying xAI servers, satellites, autonomous Tesla vehicles
His framing was blunt: We either build the Terafab or we don't have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.
Elon Musk may be preparing to build a massive semiconductor fabrication plant near the Texas A&M campus, just outside Bryan-College Station. His Space Exploration Technologies Corp. company has requested a tax abatement for the Terafab project from Grimes County. The Austin Business Journal said Musk tweeted on X that the Grimes County location is among several sites under consideration for the Terafab project.
Some of the data centers might be in space — at least by 2035, if things go according to plan. xAI will be making its own chips at the Terafab, which will take away some but not all of Nvidia's pricing power.
Its primary business, Starlink, would serve as the carrier for the orbital data center, providing high-speed communication between nodes; Starship would handle interplanetary logistics; chips developed by the Terafab project would be used for data center deployment; and xAI would serve as the brain of the data center, providing algorithms.
The TeraFab emerges when the U.S. is seeking to regain semiconductor manufacturing capacity. The CHIPS Act, investments by Intel, TSMC’s Arizona plant, Samsung’s Texas facilities, and new advanced packaging projects reflect shared concern: dependence on Asia for critical technology vital to defense, cloud, automotive, telecommunications, and AI.
