The Transition to Custom ASICs and the “Terafab” Talent Strategy
Anyway, most of the structural foundation work for the merger is ready. The announcement of Terafab, the merger of xAI, the shared supply chain, cross - company balance - sheet transactions, and SpaceX's IPO all point in the same direction.
Terafab looms large in the discussion because Musk outlined that Tesla would build the research fabrication plant, with SpaceX taking "care of like the initial phase of the scaled-up Terafab."
Terafab is planned for the Giga Texas North Campus in Austin, with an initial investment of around $55 billion and a total projected spend of $119 billion across all phases, per Wikipedia: Terafab.
But that formula’s reversing: For the final nine months of this year, it’s expecting to spend a total of at least $22.5 billion on capex, far more than the cash from operations delivered by the car and battery franchises. Analysts are predicting sharp increases from those levels as Tesla ramps spending on AI infrastructure for self-driving cars, Optimus and robotics facilities, and its Terafab project.
For organizations attempting to rapidly scale compute-intensive initiatives, securing sufficient hardware has become nearly as important as developing the software itself. To reduce dependence on external suppliers, SpaceX is reportedly pursuing a more ambitious strategy: participating in the development of a domestic semiconductor manufacturing facility known as TeraFab.
Появились подробности о масштабах гигантского полупроводникового завода Terafab, который должен радикально изменить мировую индустрию ИИ. Информацию перепостил у себя на страничке Илон Маск (Elon Musk).

After surging 115%, ASML's 53.5x P/E looks steep compared to TSMC's 36x multiple, making TSMC the better value play in the AI chip boom. ASML's unmatched EUV monopoly supplies every expanding fab, but TSM's impregnable manufacturing moat makes it the stronger long-term buy despite geopolitical risk. Elon Musk's Terafab project signals TSMC can't meet aggressive AI demand timelines, and its conservative expansion pace may leave significant revenue on the table.
The companies are also collaborating on the development of the Terafab semiconductor manufacturing facility, which is expected to produce advanced chips for multiple Musk-led enterprises. Taken together, these developments suggest a growing level of integration that some investors view as groundwork for a larger corporate combination. For Tesla enthusiasts, the attraction of a merger is easy to understand. SpaceX contributes a dominant launch business, the rapidly expanding Starlink satellite ne

A proposed $55 billion SpaceX facility is causing more questions than answers for both residents and Grimes County commissioners voting on tax abatements.
We expect reusable launch systems and high flight cadence will significantly reduce the cost per kilogram to orbit, enabling more efficient deployment of compute payloads to orbit, and eventually approach the cost of fuel. We believe our advanced satellite manufacturing capabilities enable us to build AI compute satellites at scale and lower cost than competitors. Other terrestrial data center construction costs such as building the shell, MEP, and grid interconnection are not applicable in spac
Facility plan: start at 100k wafer-starts/month, scale to 1 million wafers/month. Everything design, EUV lithography, fab, memory, packaging, test under one roof. That recursive self-improvement loop is the real unlock. Small-batch AI5 chips in 2026. High-volume Terafab output targeted for mid-2028/2029.
Terafab is envisioned as a vertically integrated facility for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and packaging. The idea behind it is to close the supply chain gaps that currently plague the semiconductor industry, allowing Elon Musk’s companies ...
SpaceX's IPO prospectus details an early-stage "Terafab" initiative to build large-scale AI chip manufacturing capacity. Still, the company warns of significant execution uncertainty, unfinalized partnerships, and capital intensity risks.
He also discusses his strategy to strengthen Intel’s balance sheet by welcoming investments from Jensen Huang’s Nvidia, Softbank, and the US government. Tan also shares his product roadmap that centers the CPU for agentic AI and inference, the collaboration with Elon Musk on Terafab, his investing framework for semiconductors, and his views on how AI is reshaping design and operations at, as he puts it, a ‘legacy spreadsheet’ tech company.
