Speaking to a crowd at the historic Seaholm Power Plant in downtown Austin, Musk confirmed that a $20 billion chip fabrication facility, dubbed the “Terafab” will be constructed on the existing Tesla campus in eastern Travis County.
The facility will start with an "advanced technology fab" near Tesla's existing Gigafactory in eastern Travis County, equipped to design, manufacture and test semiconductors of any kind.
She noted that Berenberg has yet to incorporate Terafab into its financial forecasting model for $ASML Holding (ASML.US)$ . As the world's sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography machines, ASML Holding is an indispensable equipment provider for any manufacturer aiming to mass-produce advanced process chips.
That specific shrinking process requires ASML's most advanced, heavily backlogged EUV machinery. GaN operates under a different set of physical rules. It can handle significantly higher voltages, temperatures, and frequencies than silicon. Because of these inherent material advantages, highly efficient GaN chiplets can be manufactured on slightly more mature nodes using widely available Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) lithography equipment. By leaning heavily into GaN architectures, TERAFAB can side

Terafab represents Musk’s plan to construct a domestically sourced AI computing infrastructure - from chip design to data center installation -thereby decreasing reliance on TSMC and Nvidia. Intel Foundry’s involvement may serve as a validation of the 18A's production readiness.
Another reason the Intel Terafab chips project is notable is that the intended demand is not confined to one narrow use case. TechCrunch’s April report says Musk’s March announcement linked Terafab to chips for AI compute, satellites, a mooted space data center, autonomous Tesla vehicles, and robots.
He is also describing Terafab ambitions—including allusions to eventually matching TSMC’s total global output—while the foundry whose chips the Terafab is meant to eventually replace is still the primary manufacturer of Tesla’s current generation. Jensen Huang has previously described replicating TSMC’s capabilities as “virtually impossible” for any new entrant, regardless of capital.

On March 21–22, 2026, Elon Musk announced something extraordinary: Tesla, in partnership with SpaceX and Musk’s AI venture xAI, is launching Terafab — a massive semiconductor fabrication project in Austin, Texas.
I think this is one of the reasons why it's well understood there will be some other factors taking part in this. I don't doubt Terafab will use some EUV machines, at least for some of the process (EUV even today are not used for everything), but I don't even think anyone knows how exactly it will go.
The first plant is set to manufacture chips for automotive and humanoid robotics, while the second will focus on chips designed for AI data centers located in space. Musk stated that the need for significantly higher chip production capacity for his companies necessitated the creation of Terafab. Goal: To manufacture chips equal to one terawatt of computing capacity annually.
The semiconductor giant is joining Elon Musk's ambitious terrafab project, billed as the largest ever chip manufacturing facility, one that will power space travel and advanced robotics.
