Tesla/SpaceX’s Terafab project to build a massive chip foundry on US soil is gathering steam as people involved with the project reach out to chip equipment manufacturers like Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, and Lam Research. Alongside Intel, which has already agreed to a partnership with Terafab, the project has also reached out to Samsung.
Earlier this month, Intel announced it will play an unspecified role in Elon Musk’s “Terafab” project, helping the billionaire develop chips for artificial intelligence, spaceflight, self-driving cars and robots.
In a strategic move, Tesla plans ... while the other is set to manufacture chips intended for orbital data centers. This initiative has recently gained momentum, especially with Intel joining the Tesla-SpaceX Terafab project....
TAIPEI, April 17 (Reuters) - Tesla is seeking semiconductor engineers in Taiwan for its Terafab artificial intelligence chip complex, according to job postings on its website.
For instance, last July, Samsung secured an order from Tesla (TSLA) worth $16.4 billion to produce Tesla's AI6 chips using the 2nm process. Currently, other giants are also building their own chip plants to reduce costs. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced in March the joint launch of Terafab, a 2nm wafer fab in Texas, in collaboration with SpaceX, followed by Intel’s announcement that it would join the project.
Manufacturing Processes: The job descriptions reference 2nm-class chip dimensions and multiple core front-end fabrication steps such as lithography, etching, thin films, and chemical mechanical planarization, indicating Tesla's forward-looking approach to chip manufacturing technology.
To maintain its leadership, TSMC has outlined substantial capital expenditure plans focused on scaling next-generation nodes, particularly 2nm. However, industry analysts expect tight supply conditions to persist as demand continues to outpace fabrication capacity. While competition in advanced semiconductor manufacturing is intensifying, there is no verified evidence of a joint “Terafab” initiative between Elon Musk and Intel. Intel is independently advancing its foundry strategy, including its
Intel is thus a natural partner to help him realise his vision.”Last month, Musk introduced Terafab and outlined his plans to begin with two chip fabrication plants in Austin, Texas.
The move marks one of the first tangible real estate deals tied to Terafab, which Musk claims could eventually produce up to one terawatt of computation annually — enough to support tens of millions of AI chips powering everything from autonomous vehicles to robotics and aerospace systems. The sublease is notable in Austin’s office market beyond the tenant’s profile, as blocks of space have been slow to absorb as companies have reduced office occupancy since 2020.

Can Elon Musk actually pull off $20B Terafab?
CEO CC Wei emphasized the long-term, capital-intensive nature of the foundry business while addressing competitive projects like Elon Musk's TeraFab. Despite supply chain concerns from Middle East conflicts, CFO Wendell Huang stated TSMC has diversified sourcing and expects minimal short-term ...
Elon Musk is planning a $20 billion semiconductor fabrication facility, known as the Terafab, which is set to significantly expand his companies’ industrial presence in Central Texas.
The increase is raising new concerns ... Musk announced Terafab, a proposed $20-25 billion semiconductor fabrication plant near Giga Texas, also known as the Gigafactory, in eastern Travis County....
Analyst firm Morgan Stanley estimates total costs could reach $35 to $45 billion, with manufacturing equipment alone accounting for $20 to $25 billion. Crucially, CFO Vaibhav Taneja has clarified that Terafab is not included in Tesla's existing ...
Elon Musk is pressuring suppliers to speed up his plans for a $25 billion semiconductor manufacturing plant in Texas. “Terafab” will be a joint project between Musk-owned businesses SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI to build AI-ready chips: Musk has ...
The Terafab project is an ambitious plan with an investment scale of $20 billion to $25 billion. Its core objective is to achieve a total computing capacity of 1 terawatt (Terawatt) annually.
Musk announced a Tesla-SpaceX-xAI terafab in Austin with up to $25 billion investment. It targets terawatt-scale computing for AI satellites and robots.
