Commentary: What does Tesla's Terafab's approximity to Samsung Texas plant tell us?Tomorrow's Headlines ... Samsung and SK Hynix boost China factory investments in 2025 amid memory demand surgeTomorrow's Headlines ... At Nvidia's GTC 2026 conference last week, two figures were notable in helping CEO Jensen Huang connect with major Taiwanese business partners.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled an initiative last week to help build AI data centres in space, while Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos has said orbital data centres could solve electricity demand constraints on Earth.
People said it was impossible, and now Tesla is making 2 million electric cars a year. Then xAI, although it’s a new company, now part of SpaceX, has also built the first gigawatt-scale compute cluster in record time. Jensen Huang from Nvidia said he’d never seen anything built so fast in his life.
The Terafab project, estimated to cost at least $20 billion, will start with the Advanced Technology Fab in Austin, Texas, where Tesla is already headquartered. Musk said that the two types of chips will be produced in the Terafab: one for ...
What remains to be seen is how the advanced technology fab feeds designs into the Terafab pipeline. If the smaller facility can validate 2nm process designs efficiently, it compresses the timeline for Terafab to reach meaningful production volumes. That's the strategic logic: don't wait for ...
The ambition of Terafab is staggering, but its path is measured against a very different reality. While Musk's project is still in the planning phase, the industry's current leader, TSMC, has already commenced volume production of its next-generation 2nm-class (N2) process.
Bloomberg reported that the initial phase would involve an "advanced technology fab" capable of designing, testing, and manufacturing chips in one location, with a long-term goal of supporting up to a terawatt of computing power annually. Musk has also floated plans for 2nm chips and a fully integrated feedback loop to accelerate development cycles. ... The Terafab is central to Musk's broader strategy of tying together Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI into a unified AI ecosystem.
Given that Tesla currently relies on TSMC and Samsung for its chip supply, while the Terafab is targeting 2 nm process technology, the most advanced production node, there is plenty of hubris in Musk's announcement.
Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI unveiled TERAFAB, a $25B chip factory targeting one terawatt of AI compute annually.
The joint Tesla-SpaceX fab will make both terrestrial inference chips and space-hardened processors.
Musk said on Saturday that the Terafab is not only necessary to scale robotaxis and Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot, but also to deploy space-based compute.
The most eyebrow-raising part of the presentation was the space computing vision. Musk said 80% of Terafab’s compute output would be directed toward space-based orbital AI satellites, with only 20% for ground-based applications. He argued that solar irradiance in space is roughly 5x greater than at Earth’s surface, and that heat rejection in vacuum makes thermal scaling viable.
The Terafab project gives its team a massive throughput opportunity to work on improving the yield learning curve, as high-scale production is very likely to create friction in the early stages, enabling permanent fixes that would then improve ...
Tesla’s AI5 tape-out is the clearest indication yet that Tesla Terafab is already in motion! In this episode of @overthehorizon, futurist and NextBigFuture fo...
The facility is projected to create thousands of high‑tech jobs in the Austin area, potentially boosting local economies and positioning the region as a technological hub akin to Silicon Valley.
Elon Musk has unveiled plans for a $20-25 billion joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI to build a massive chip fabrication facility called Terafab in Austin, Texas. The goal is to produce one terawatt of computing power annually - 50 ...
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently shared ... known as the Terafab project, aims to significantly increase the production of high-end computer chips for use in both terrestrial and space applications....
Blue Origin Joins the Race for Orbital Data Centers With 51K Satellite Plan · Still, Musk said his company is currently missing the large-scale capacity to manufacture the AI chips needed for the satellites. Hence, his presentation was mainly focused on building a new factory, dubbed the "Terafab," to produce cutting-edge processors, including GPUs and memory chips, for SpaceX and his EV company, Tesla, which is also developing humanoid robots.
The Terafab project, unveiled by Elon Musk, is designed as a fully integrated semiconductor facility combining chip design, manufacturing, packaging and testing in a single location.
