Musk first introduced Terafab earlier this year as a strategic collaboration between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The venture aims to build a fully integrated semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States, focused on producing ...
The ambition follows work by SpaceX, its xAI unit and Tesla to jointly develop the Terafab, an advanced AI chip manufacturing complex that CEO Elon Musk is planning in Austin, Texas.
The ambition follows work by SpaceX, its xAI unit and Tesla to jointly develop the Terafab, an advanced AI chip manufacturing complex that CEO Elon Musk is planning in Austin, Texas.
Terafab is Musk's (one might say) bold venture into making his own chips for xAI, Tesla, and SpaceX to power cars, robots, and data centres in space. It's apparently necessary, given the world seemingly doesn't produce enough chips for these ...
Tesla's Terafab project launches in five days in bold push into AI chip manufacturing: 200bn AI chips annually? Samsung reportedly to test EUV tools at Taylor fab in March
Samsung’s new plant near Taylor is seen in October. By 2028, it’s expected to encompass about 8 million square feet. Elon Musk said a new Tesla/SpaceX chip fabrication plant would be 12 times that.Aaron E. Martinez/Austin American-Statesman · Musk’s plans, if achieved, would exceed that. He shared a comparison of Terafab to Gigafactory Texas, noting Terafab will be “one hell of a building!” Analysts have estimated the project could cost at least $20 billion.
The Terafab project faces several monumental risks: The Physics of Lithography: Building a leading-edge fab (capable of 2nm or below) is arguably the most difficult engineering feat on Earth. TSMC and Samsung have spent decades and hundreds of billions of dollars to master this.
There's lot of ramping up to do, but the goal (per Musk's comments at the Tesla shareholder meeting in November last year) is for Terafab to eventually be capable of producing 1 million chip wafers per month using a 2-nanometer process tech.
However, over the medium to long term, if Tesla establishes a “partially in-house, partially collaborative” model, the real impact may be less on TSMC’s technological lead and more on large customers’ bargaining power within the supply chain. The report points out that even if Terafab does not become a fully integrated mega-fab, it could still serve as a strategic bargaining chip for Tesla to pursue greater chip autonomy.
Nvidia’s pricing power over the AI industry depends on there being no credible alternative at the leading edge. If Terafab delivers even a fraction of its stated capacity, the economics of AI compute change permanently.
While the Terafab’s potential economic impact is undeniable – bringing thousands of high-skilled jobs and strengthening Texas’s growing semiconductor corridor alongside Samsung’s Taylor plant and TI’s Sherman facility – it may also place considerable strain on the state’s infrastructure.
The collaboration between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI in developing Terafab is set to impact not only terrestrial industries but also the space industry significantly. The economic implications of producing a terawatt of computing power annually on a single site extend beyond current applications into future aspirations such as the development of SpaceX's "AI Sat Mini" satellites.

The factory is expected to support chip families including edge-inference processors, space-hardened chips for orbital satellites and high-bandwidth memory, according to the job postings. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The hiring push comes as demand for AI drives companies to secure more advanced chipmaking capacity, amid constraints at TSMC. When asked about Terafab, TSMC said on Thursday it would not underestimate competitors, but added there are "no shor
Musk called it “the most epic chip-building exercise in history by far.” The “TERAFAB” project is a joint effort involving Tesla, SpaceX and xAI. Musk said the chips will be used in vehicles, Tesla’s humanoid AI robots and for projects ...
Considering the various parties ... details. Elon Musk: Yeah. We’re still working out the details of the Terafab deployment. In the near term, Tesla will be building the research fab on our Giga Texas campus....
Notably, at least one position requires familiarity with TSMC-developed advanced packaging technologies, including CoWoS and SoIC — signaling Tesla's intent to leverage cutting-edge interconnect innovations. This recruitment drive reflects the surging global demand for AI chips and the growing pressure on existing chipmaking capacity. When asked about Terafab, TSMC acknowledged the competitive landscape but noted there are no shortcuts in semiconductor manufacturing, emphasizing that buildi
The Terafab collaboration is built around advanced packaging and 18A node features; public commentary ties the effort to gate-all-around transistor architecture and backside power delivery, both integral to 18A designs.
To that end, Terafab is a joint venture between his firms Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, to create the largest end-to-end chip design and manufacturing facility.
