Given that Tesla currently relies on TSMC and Samsung for its chip supply, while the Terafab is targeting 2 nm process technology, the most advanced production node, there is plenty of hubris in Musk's announcement.
The most eyebrow-raising part of the presentation was the space computing vision. Musk said 80% of Terafab’s compute output would be directed toward space-based orbital AI satellites, with only 20% for ground-based applications. He argued that solar irradiance in space is roughly 5x greater than at Earth’s surface, and that heat rejection in vacuum makes thermal scaling viable.
There are increased economies of scale in space, while on Earth, you get challenges with real physical locations. It is likely only a few years before it's cheaper to send chips up to space, rather than build a facility on the ground. After the Terafab, the obvious next question is achieving a petawatt of compute.
The bottom line is a tension between long-term vision and immediate execution. The Terafab announcement sets a high bar for future growth and vertical integration. Yet the simultaneous Samsung deal indicates a grounded approach to the present, securing production without waiting for a new fab to come online.
